October 26 - 2007 "Charges against Doug Howlett dropped"

“October 26

Charges against Doug Howlett are being dropped by Scotland Yard. He will pay the cost of repairing damages to both cars”

From 2008 Rugby Almanack “Chronicle of Events” p.337.

An earlier entry (October 7 p.336) in “Chronicle of Events” states “In London, the day after most of the All Blacks and management had flown home, Doug Howlett (who stayed behind) is arrested after two cars were damaged outside the hotel the team had been staying in.”

NZRU media release 22 Nov. 2007:

“All Blacks wing Doug Howlett has attended a misconduct meeting at the New Zealand Rugby Union to discuss his behaviour following the All Blacks Rugby World Cup quarterfinal loss.

All Black Manager Darren Shand said Howlett’s behaviour was found to amount to serious misconduct under the terms of the players’ Collective Employment Agreement and his employment contract with the NZRU. Shand said it was very disappointing that the incident had happened, especially at a difficult time for the team, but Howlett had accepted his responsibility in the matter. “Doug faced intense public scrutiny over his behaviour and has faced up to his actions and made reparations,” Shand said. Howlett has received an appropriate sanction by the NZRU consistent with treating it as serious misconduct under the Collective Employment Agreement. Shand said the NZRU had taken into account the circumstances of Howlett’s conduct, the significant costs incurred by Howlett as a result of his behaviour, Howlett’s long and distinguished career with New Zealand rugby and his departure shortly to play for Irish club Munster.

As it is a private employment matter, details of the sanction are confidential. The NZRU and Howlett now consider the matter closed.”

Another side of Doug Howlett:

“Outreach Foundation]

On 22 February 2007 Howlett launched “The Doug Howlett Outreach Foundation”, which is aimed at New Zealand children between the ages of 8 and 14 who demonstrate ability academically as well as on the sports field or court, initially in the codes of rugby union, rugby league, and netball. Specifically it will assist with school fees, school books, sports fees and sports shoes or boots.”
