January 13 - 1945 NZ Services edged out by Newport

A week after their big win over Sutton the NZ Services were brought down to earth when they travelled to Wales. Their opponents, Newport, on way to a great era on the late 1940 and early 1950s, came out on top in a close encounter, winning 18 – 15.

There were changes in the Services team from the Sutton game, though the lethal midfield of Roy Roper and Morrie Goddard played, with the experienced Eric Grant captaining the team from the right wing.

NZ Services scorers:

E Grant (2) and R A Roper tries. W F Crist (2) and N A Elmes conversions. (15)
