Rugby Jamboree III update 2

Rugby Jamboree III                     published 12 January 2024

Ian St George, researcher and author of Cliff Porter captain of the Invincibles 100 years on, has confirmed he is attending the jamboree and will present on Sunday.

Ian came to our attention in 2019 when he asked us the whereabouts of the Invincibles Loving Cup.  The following year, during Covid restrictions, the North v South game was reintroduced. The Loving Cup was the awarded trophy until 1932 but it had gone missing.  Thanks largely to Ian’s efforts it was found in the storerooms of Eden Park, missing its lid and filled with raffle ticket butts.  The trophy was polished up and Ian had the pleasure of awarding the Loving Cup to Sam Whitelock, the winning captain of the North v South game.

Ian, had by now met Elaine Westlake, the daughter of the Invincibles captain, Cliff Porter.  He became interested in Cliff Porter’s story and self-published a biography of Cliff in 2022.

Thanks to all who have RSVP’d so far, we have other interesting delegates and we will share their stories in the next update.
