Richard Loe

11 September 2010

A phone call to the Lyon Rugby Club in France advised Richard Loe he was required to bolster the 1986 All Black touring squad.

Loe, who had made his Waikato debut earlier that year, headed to La Rochelle and made his first appearance for New Zealand against the French Barbarians and so became a long association with the All Blacks.

An excellent trial ensured him a place in the victorious 1987 World Cup squad and he played two tests in that campaign. He toured Japan later that year, then played the tests against Wales in 1988. Soon established himself as a permanent member of the All Black front row. Toured Argentina in 1991 and was one of the first chosen for the World Cup squad later that year.

Continued as regular member of All Black teams until he was suspended for six months after an eye gouging incident involving Greg Cooper in Waikato's national championship victory in 1992. A prolific try scoring prop where his strength in the maul was a huge advantage to his team.

A former NZ Colt, Loe, born in Christchurch April 6,1960, came to Waikato from Marlborough in 1986 and linked up with the Fraser-Tech club. The 1.88m and 116kg prop became a dominant force in the strong Waikato pack and went on to play 96 matches for the union before he returned to the South Island in early 1994 to become a key figure in the resurgence of Canterbury rugby, representing that province 1994-96.

He also appeared at Super 12 level for the Crusaders 1996 and the Chiefs 1997 before retiring because of a neck injury.
