Adrian Cashmore

1 August 2010

Adrian Cashmore, a capable outside back, mainly a fullback, and an excellent goalkicker, had only a fleeting involvement with the All Blacks in the late 1990s, being unlucky in that he played at the same time as the peak of a phenomenal contemporary, Christian Cullen.

Cashmore made only two appearances for the All Blacks, but never started a match. He was a wing replacement for Jeff Wilson, against Scotland at Eden Park in 1996 and against Australia in Melbourne in 1997.

He was chosen for the tour of South Africa in 1996, but had to withdraw with an injury and was replaced by Matthew Cooper.

Cashmore, though, had an extensive record in New Zealand rugby at representative and Super 12 levels and in national tiers immediately below the All Blacks.

The son of former Bay of Plenty fullback and later chairman of the union, Richard Cashmore. Cashmore showed immense promise in his early years in Tauranga and made the Bay representative side as an 19-year old in 1992. After 10 games for his home union and playing for the New Zealand Colts in 1993, Cashmore transferred to Auckland where he played the bulk of his career.

When he accepted an offer to play in Japan at the end of the 2000 season Cashmore had played 73 matches for Auckland in which he had scored 826 points. He participated in several notable Auckland triumphs in the 1994-2000 periods, including Ranfurly Shield wins in 1995 and 1996 and NPC first division title wins in 1995-96. He was in the champion Blues Super 12 sides of 1996-97 and his 47 matches for the franchise brought him 619 points.

With good pace and considerable enterprise on attack Cashmore thrived in sevens rugby before the Super 12 cut across that. He was in the national team in four tournaments in 1995, including the title win that year at Hong Kong.

Between 1996 and 2000 Cashmore also made numerous appearances for New Zealand Maori and New Zealand A.

Adrian Cashmore returned to New Zealand and Tauranga in 2004, making one appearance, as a substitute, for the Chiefs. He also started and played very competently in 10 matches for Bay of Plenty who enjoyed their best season ever by lifting the Ranfurly Shield from Auckland and reaching the NPC semi finals. By now aged 32 he continued with both the Chiefs and Bay of Plenty in 2005 before heading to play for Neath-Swansea Ospreys in Wales.
