Samuel Whitelock comes from a strong rugby background with his older brother, George Whitelock, captaining the New Zealand 19 side in 2005, and his two other brothers both representing New Zealand at Under 17 level.
Although rugby is his first choice, Whitelock was selected for a New Zealand Under 18 basketball training camp in 2006. He played lock for New Zealand Schools in 2005 and 2006 and also captained the Hurricanes Schools side in 2006, his second year with the side.
