A rangy and energetic loose forward, Adam Thomson fits in well to the dynamic patterns set down by the All Blacks in 2008. With a left-right combination in the scrum, Adam has been learning the lines of number seven under the tutelage of Richie McCaw – a man he described as “not a bad teacher to have showing you the ropes” in addition to his traditional number 6 role.
Adam has been representing New Zealand almost continuously, in various teams, for the last eight years. Adam has played for New Zealand Secondary Schools, New Zealand Under 19, and New Zealand Under 21. He did a stint with the New Zealand Sevens team, in 2007, before making his All Blacks Debut against the Irish in freezing conditions in Wellington.
Although originally a Cantabrian (he played a bit of schoolboy Rugby with Dan Carter, in the Christchurch Boys High First XV), Adam has been playing for Otago since 2004 and played for the Highlanders in 2006 and 2008. He studied Physical Education at Otago University and is now well settled in the South.
Career Notes
• Was Otago’s leading try scorer in 2007 with five.
• Played in four tournaments for the New Zealand Sevens in 2007.
• Became the first Highlanders forward in their 13 year history to score tries in three consecutive games in 2008.
• Has won every game in which he represented New Zealand Under 19, Under 21 and Sevens.
