Flying wing Sitiveni Sivivatu made his Test debut in the All Blacks Test against Fiji at North Shore and promptly set an All Blacks record in becoming the first All Black to score four tries on debut.
While blessed with scintillating pace, Sivivatu always seems to have time to find, or create, space where it’s needed. Returned to the All Blacks for the 2005 end-of-year tour after missing the Philips Tri Nations campaign and much of the Air New Zealand NPC with injury and scored a pair in his first match back, against Ireland at Dublin.
Hailing from Jonah Lomu’s old school, Wesley College in Pukekohe, Sivivatu has scored prolifically for Counties Manukau in the Air New Zealand NPC Second Division, for Waikato in the First Division, for the Chiefs in the Rebel Sport Super 12 and for the Pacific Islanders in the international arena, and looks set to do the same for the All Blacks.
NZRU Annual Awards
Air New Zealand Division Two Player of the Year, 2002
Career Notes
• Set a record for tries on Test debut that lasted all of 36 hours before being broken by South African wing Tonderai Chavanga, who scored six in his first Test, against Uruguay.
• Finished as the Chiefs’ leading try-scorer in the 2006 Rebel Sport Super 14 with seven.
• Despite missing the Chiefs’ first four games in the 2005 Super 12, he still finished as their leading try-scorer for the season.
• In 2004, became the first player to score five tries in a match against Auckland. That five-try haul equalled the Air New Zealand NPC Division One record for tries in a match.
• Scored a team-record 14 tries for Counties Manukau in the 2002 Air New Zealand NPC Division Two competition.
• Played three matches for the Pacific Islanders in 2004 and scored a pair of tries in each of the Tests against New Zealand and the Test against South Africa. No other player has scored pairs of tries against New Zealand and South Africa in consecutive weeks – in fact, only five players have managed to tally pairs against both sides in their lifetime.
