Joe Rokocoko

1 August 2010

Rokocoko is a player whose attacking qualities are without question. Add to this his defensive game and high work-rate and you have a special player. Nimble and quick but deceptively strong, Joe Rokocoko has set the standard for finishing, and creating, exhilarating tries.

His brilliant 2003 season was recognised by the International Rugby Players’ Association with a nomination for 2003 Player of the Year.

Rokocoko is the youngest player selected (a week before his 20th birthday) for the All Blacks since another great wing Jonah Lomu in 1994.

His family arrived in New Zealand when he was five years old, and he is a member of a select group of players who made New Zealand Schools for three years in a row.

Representative honours also include playing in the New Zealand Under 19 side that won the Junior World Cup in Chile in 2001, playing in all four matches.

Career Notes
• Started on the wing in all three matches for the Junior All Blacks in Australia in 2005 and recorded a hat-trick in the tour opener versus Queensland.
• Scored three tries against England at Eden Park in 2004 to record his third Test hat-trick, following similar efforts in 2003 against Australia and France.
• Scored 17 tries in 12 Tests in 2003, a world record for a calendar year.
• In the same year, became the first player to score 10 tries in his first five Tests (though he went scoreless on debut), and the first All Black to score two or more tries in four consecutive Tests.
• Selected for the All Blacks after his debut season with the Blues in 2003, Rokocoko played for New Zealand before he played for Auckland.
