Mils Muliaina (first name Malili) combines dependability and strong positional play at the back with pace and a dangerous counterattacking ability, and also has the ability to cover wing and centre at the highest level.
Muliaina transferred to Waikato and the Chiefs for the 2006 season, adding to the Chiefs’ already-potent backline for the Rebel Sport Super 14 season, in which he scored four tries, tied for second on the team.
He was one of only two players (with Richie McCaw) to play in 12 Tests in 2006, Muliaina started six at centre and five in his more familiar position of fullback; in 2005, he started one Test match on the wing. Which ever jersey he wears, Muliaina combines sound positional play and secure defence with pace and a dangerous counterattacking ability.
The former Southlander first sprang to prominence at national level when he shifted north to Auckland to board at Kelston Boys’ High School (All Blacks coach Graham Henry’s old school as principal) and promptly made it into the NZ Schools team.
Career Notes
• Started at centre for champions Auckland in the 2005 Air New Zealand NPC Division One semifinal and final. Played in No 13 twice for the Chiefs in 2006.
• His 34 consecutive Test matches from debut through to the 2005 Test against Ireland in Dublin is the 12th-longest streak in All Blacks history.
• Just one of two players to have scored four tries in a Test match and four tries in a Rebel Sport Super 12 match.
• Was equal-top try-scorer at the 2003 Rugby World Cup.
• Won a Commonwealth Games gold medal with the New Zealand Sevens team in Manchester in 2002, IRB Under 21 World Championships in both 2000 and 2001 and the IRB Under 19 World Championship in 1999.
